ALL STATE ORCHESTRA February 12-14, 2009
All-State Orchestra Moving to Fort Collins
57th Annual Colorado All-State High School Orchestra Audition Guidelines
CHSAA Eligibility Requirements can be found
in the
CHSAA Music Handbook. In addition to these requirements, please refer to the
following All-State Orchestra requirements:
Any student participating in All-State Orchestra must be actively involved in
the school's parallel musical organization at the time of audition and during
second semester when All-State Orchestra takes place.
Applicants must be recommended by their local school music director and
principal.
All school music directors MUST provide proof of
MENC membership.
A student must be eligible at the time of auditions for All-State Orchestra and
must remain eligible throughout the time period in order
to participate in All-State Orchestra.
Students selected to perform with the Colorado All-State Orchestra, must attend
in order not to deprive someone else of this
opportunity, and that in order to utilize complete rehearsal time and to be fair
to the other musicians, anyone arriving late to rehearsals may be demoted or
dropped from the group. Missing a rehearsal or any portion of a rehearsal is not
allowed!
Musician(s) who represent the high school are the responsibility of the high
school. The high school is responsible for housing
and providing chaperones for participating students. It is not the
responsibility of All-State Orchestra, CHSAA, CMEA or the
University of Colorado to chaperone students.
Check calendars carefully before auditioning. Being selected to All-State
Orchestra is an honor.
Students selected must attend all
events. If selected and you find you are unable to attend, you must contact the
All-State Chair by January 9, 2009 or as soon as possible.
Failure to comply with cancellation procedures could result in the student being
disqualified from future All-State events and may
jeopardize the high school’s future eligibility in All-State Orchestra.
Audition Information

Cassette Tape Recording Instructions
Only one student per cassette tape.
Each cassette (do not label the box) must be carefully labeled with student
name, high school, instrument and date of recording. Information on tape will be
covered before being judged.
Unmarked tapes will not be processed.
Please listen to tapes before submitting. Poor sound quality, inadequate
lead-time and simple correctable mistakes can adversely affect your student's
audition. No accompaniment of any kind or audible metronome sounds are allowed
on the audition recording. Remember--the judges can only judge what they can
hear! If possible, use new tapes as recycled tapes can bleed through newly
recorded material. Several tapes were blank last year!
Any audition recording with audible metronome sounds or accompaniment will
immediately be disqualified.
Each part of the audition is very important and weighed equally. Pay close
attention to rhythm, intonation, and tempo of scales and excerpts, as well as
the prepared piece. Portions of the audition that do not meet the minimum
requirements will be given an automatic "0" regardless of performance. Please
Note: Judges will be allowed to discontinue listening to any audition recording
that does not meet a 50% score. The remainder of the recording not listened to
will receive a score of 0.
Strings and Harp - Follow the audition information for the UNC Western States
Honor Orchestra auditions
Winds, Brass and Percussion – Please see the audition requirements listed later
in this document. A list of required instrumentation is enclosed. Wind players
who are proficient on more than one instrument should send a separate tape/CD
for each instrument on which they wish to audition.
Audition Requirements are listed in the Audition Materials section of this
document.
Compact Disc Recording Instructions
PLEASE NOTE NEW CD RECORDING PROCESS - Only one student per CD.
Please include a label within the CD box (do not label the actual CD Box or CD)
with the student name, high school name, instrument, and date of recording. CD’s
will be assigned a code before being judged to maintain anonymity. (No CD
reporting form is required.)
Please listen to each CD before submitting. As poor sound quality is not an
issue on CD’s, please listen to each CD on a car CD player or other
non-professional CD player to insure proper playability. CD’s that cannot be
played on a standard CD player will not be judged. The judges will only have
standard CD players on which to listen to the recordings. Many CDs were blank
last year and therefore could not be judged.
Inadequate lead-time and simple correctable mistakes can adversely affect your
student’s audition.
No accompaniment of any kind or audible metronome sounds are
allowed on the audition recording. Remember-the judges can only judge what they
hear!
Any audition recording with audible metronome sounds or accompaniment will
immediately be disqualified.
Each part of the audition is very important and weighed equally. Pay close
attention to rhythm, intonation, and tempo of scales and excerpts, as well as
the prepared piece. Portions of the audition that do not meet the minimum
requirements will be given an automatic “0” regardless of performance. Please
Note: Judges will be allowed to discontinue listening to any audition recording
that does not meet a 50% score. The remainder of the recording not listened to
will receive a score of 0.

Winds, Brass and Percussion – Please see the audition requirements listed later
in this document. A list of required instrumentation is enclosed. Wind players
who are proficient on more than one instrument should send a separate tape/CD
for each instrument on which they wish to audition.
Audition Requirements are listed in the Audition Materials section of this
document.
Whatever recording method you choose for your audition recording, please ensure
the best possible performance by having a professional record your audition
(your teacher). Please do not include reverb or other environmental effects to
your recording. These additions often reduce the quality of a performance in the
ears of the judges as they are listening for 'your' quality of playing and not
what you would sound like in Carnegie Hall. If at all possible, it is
recommended that a compact disk recording be sent in rather than cassette. The
sound quality of a compact disk is far superior to that of a cassette. Although
CDs are highly recommended, this is not a requirement, as the judging panels do
understand that not all schools have the ability to record digitally.
Notification of Results
After October 24th, you can monitor the All-State Orchestra Website to make sure
your school's audition packet has been received.
2009 Colorado All State High School Orchestra audition results will be sent
directly to High School Music Directors in December, along with music,
pre-registration forms, schedules and hotel information. All students who submit
an audition will be notified of the audition results in writing. Audition
CDs/tapes will not be returned unless the Chair-Elect is notified by January 16,
2009 that you wish to have these recordings returned. All judging cards will be
available to directors at the All-State Orchestra weekend.
Results will also be posted on the ASO website:
