2011-2012 Colorado All State High School Orchestra

 

Audition Information for: Strings and Harp

 

Auditions for All-State Orchestra strings and harp will use the same materials as the 2011 UNC Western States Honor Orchestra. Schools or directors who did not receive or can no longer locate the materials should promptly contact a nearby colleague, an ASO Board member, or the official Colorado All-State Orchestra website. (http://www.coloradoallstateorchestra.org)

Please read the recording procedure carefully and complete the audition form clearly and correctly. CD’s or Tapes, materials and fees (payable to Colorado Music Educators Association) must be postmarked by October 7th, 2011. No CD/ tape will be accepted for adjudication thereafter.

CDs/Tapes should contain the following material:

Violin:

1.             Scales:       D Major Scale – three octaves, dotted quarter note = 80

                                 B Melodic Minor Scale – three octaves, dotted quarter note = 80

2.             Excerpt:     Weber’s Overture to the Opera, “Oberon,” Adagio sostenuto, eighth note = 102

3.             Solo:          Work of your choice with a duration of 2 – 2+1/2 minutes

 

Viola:

1.             Scales:       G Major Scale – three octaves, dotted quarter note = 80

                                  E Melodic Minor Scale – three octaves, dotted quarter note = 80

2.             Excerpt:     Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in G Major, Mvt I: Bedachtig nicht eilen, quarter note = 90

3.             Solo:           Work of your choice with a duration of 2 – 2+1/2 minutes

 

Cello:

1.             Scales:       C Major Scale – three octaves, quarter note = 40

                                 A Melodic Minor Scale – three octaves, quarter note = 40

2.             Excerpts:   Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, Mvt. 2: Adagio non troppo, quarter note = 50

                                      Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Mvt. 3, dotted half note = 84

3.             Solo:          Work of your choice with a duration of 2 – 2+1/2 minutes

 

Double Bass:

1.             Scales:       C Major Scale – two octaves, dotted quarter note = 70

                                 A Melodic Minor Scale – three octaves, dotted quarter note = 70

2.             Excerpt:     Haydn’s Symphony No. 88, Finale: Allegro con spirito, quarter note = 120-130

3.             Solo:          Work of your choice with a duration of 2 – 2+1/2 minutes

 

Harp:

1.             Etude:        #36

2.             Excerpt:     Moldau by Friederich Smetana

 

Suggested String Repertoire for String Solos:

 

Please refer to the ASO website for repertoire suggestions.  Certain works are assigned a numerical score according to difficulty.  Based on the overall performance, and the particular excerpt chosen from the repertoire, the student could receive points up to this numerical score.  Works not on the list may still be used in the audition.  In this situation adjudicators will assign a difficulty rating at the time of the audition and the work will be added to the list for next year.  Please audition only on solo literature.  Orchestral excerpts from school orchestral music are not acceptable solo selections for All-State Orchestra auditions.

 

 

DO NOT ANNOUNCE THE STUDENT’S NAME ON THE RECORDING!

 

 

Attention: All state auditions will now be adjudicated a little differently. Applicants will given full points for the difficulty rating only if the overall performance of the solo was well done and if the chosen excerpts of the solo were difficult enough to deserve the points.
