AUDITION ENTRY FORM

2010-2011 Colorado All State High School Orchestra

Audition Information for: Percussion

All percussion applicants will be required to audition on snare drum, tympani and marimba or xylophone. Minimum requirements of octaves and tempi for scales on marimba are listed below. Minimum requirements of tempi for excerpts will be those listed below.

Please read the taping procedures carefully and complete the audition form clearly and correctly. Tapes, materials and fees (payable to Colorado Music Educators Association) must be postmarked by October 15, 2010. No CD/tape will be accepted for adjudication thereafter.

Tapes/CDs should contain the following material: (Do not announce the student’s name on the recording!)

Snare Drum:

Orchestral style roll – pp crescendo for 15 seconds to ff diminuendo for 15 seconds to pp

Etude No. 5 from Advanced Snare Drum Studies by Mitchell Peters

Excerpt from Scheherazade – Symphonic Suite (movement IV)

Marimba or Xylophone:

D Major Scale – 3 octaves in sixteenth notes, quarter = approx. 112

C natural minor scale - 2 octaves in sixteenth notes, quarter = approx. 112

Sarabande from Cello Suite I by J.S. Bach (no repeats) – to be played on Marimba

Excerpt from Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin – to be played on Xylophone

Timpani:

Roll on B-flat – pp crescendo for 15 seconds to ff diminuendo for 15 seconds to pp

Etude No. 31 from Modern Method for Timpani by Saul Goodman

Excerpt from Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven

DO NOT ANNOUNCE THE STUDENT’S NAME ON THE RECORDING!

Attention: All state auditions will now be adjudicated a little differently. Applicants will given full points for the difficulty rating only if the overall performance of the solo was well done and if the chosen excerpts of the solo were difficult enough to deserve the points.
